Heading up the road, you’ll notice this enormous building on the hillside.
This building is John Wood’s Hospital, though is not a hospital anymore. The original building was built in 1665 from the bequest of local land owner Jon Wood to care for 13 elderly, male parishioners with the name of Wood. Sadly, the original building was destroyed in a terrible flood and the new hospital was built with accommodation for now 16 men but who still had to have the name Wood. In 1932 housing was made available to men with any surname and in the 1970s self contained accommodation was provided by houses built on the grounds for married couples. Today the site is managed by a local housing association is a retirement home available for all who need it.

You may take the bus back to your next destination, or follow the main road past the Upper Largo Hotel and down into Lower Largo taking the path on the sharp bend.
