Here’s a great fact for you – did you know Methil used to have the most pubs per person of anywhere else in the UK?! Today pubs all over the UK are closing; but luckily, we still have this wee gem – East Dock Bar and Restaurant. Pop in for a quick drink and ask the bar staff about their stories of the local area. The food is freshly cooked to order and provides a welcome respite for your legs.
Behind you up this short street is Methil Printing Company which has been established for over one hundred years and is still independently operating.

A traditional friendly local pub which remains authentic to the good old days when Methil was a booming economic hub. They serve a great selection of Beers, Wines, Spirits, Malts, soft and hot drinks. The restaurant serves Breakfast, Lunches, Full meals, Desserts and Bar Snacks at affordable prices.
As you continue along the road, the white buildings on the right are clearly quite modern. They sit on the site of Methil Public School which was built in 1883 and stood for ninety years until 1973. This photo is from around 1910. Taught by rote and learning the three “Rs” – writing, reading and arithmetic, pupils used chalk and slate to learn and the Tawse, a leather belt, was used to keep discipline. When not chanting their times tables, laughter filled the school yard as children played various games such as hopscotch, skipping, or with the Fifers call the Gird which is a small metal hoop pushed along with a stick. Due to the poverty in the area, many children attended the school without the luxury of shoes, and housing conditions in Lower Methil were generally regarded as deplorable.
