About Point 8

Life was tough living and working on ships and taking a break from the sea was very important. This purple building is The Sailor’s Rest and was originally set up as a Christian organisation around 1920, shortly after the new dock entrance just down the road.

It was named The Bethel and enabled sailors to get good night’s sleep, a shower and pray; the centre even offered church services for the community. Today, the building still serves this purpose acting as a community centre and even offering a community gym next door.

In the 1990’s and 2000’s, this was the heart of the community and was a key meeting place for organisation of community events such as Lower Methil Gala, where shows, food vans and floats lined the street, and the “Duke and Duchess of Lower Methil” arrived in style accompanied by the Methil Sea Cadets.

Pop in for a loo break during weekdays!
