This Malagan (named after sculptures from Papua New Guinea) has been created by local Sculptor Alan Faulds. It is carved and painted Scottish oak with recycled copper. It took more than a year to make and had many influences, from Mexican, Hindu, Baltic, Indian and Ancient Greek art. It was inspired by a trip to Lithuania in which tall wooden roadside structures named Roofed Poles really caught his eye. The body of the piece has four narrative panels, the face looking out to sea is taken from a Central American mask used in the festival “Dance of the Conquest”.
