Religion has for a long time been very important to the local people. Christianity has been the religion in this region for around a thousand years.
A group of Baptists started meeting in Largo from around 1778 but it was not until 1790 that Dr John Goodsir, along with Thomas Paterson became joint pastors of a more formalised church. In 1809 Goodsir acquired the building that became known as ‘The Old Baptist Meeting House’. Prior to the use of this venue, the group had been meeting in a long-gone old, dilapidated structure. He gave his services free and largely unassisted for around 25 years until his death in 1816.
There were a number of Pastors after this and in 1867 the church became divided and a number of members broke away to set up their own congregation, which initially met in the Old Durham School at the Temple. Other, mostly older, members continued to meet in the old meeting house, meanwhile, the more modern, and largely younger, breakaway group instigated the building of the ‘new church’ on the site at the Orry. Largo Baptist Church was converted into the Aurrie in 2021.
Let's talk about the history of the Church in Scotland. A long time ago, in the 6th century, a man named Saint Columba came to Scotland from Ireland to spread Christianity. He and other monks built churches and taught people about God and Jesus. Then, in the 1500s, a big change happened. A man named John Knox led something called the Reformation. This meant that people wanted the church to be different. They wanted to read the Bible in their own language and have simpler church services. This created the Church of Scotland, also known as the Presbyterian Church. After that, there were some disagreements about how the church should be run. Some people wanted things one way, and others wanted it a different way The Baptist church was born from this. Today, there any many religions and denominations of Christianity, but the largest is Church of Scotland; it's about helping people, praying, and teaching about God. It’s part of Scotland's history and helps people come together as a community
