The Co-Op Movement

The large building in front of you is the former Co-Operative building. Yup, the same Co-op that may be at the end of your street, though operating very differently.

The co-operative movement in Fife traces its origins back to the early 19th century. It was part of the broader co-operative movement in Scotland, which aimed to provide affordable goods and services to working-class families.

The first co-operative societies in Fife were established to meet the basic needs of workers in industrial towns, particularly those involved in coal mining and textiles. These societies were formed to offer fair prices and improve the quality of life for their members.

This building closed in 1994; today, the building is private housing.
