The square is named after Mary Somerville, a brilliant 19th-century mathematician, astronomer and science writer.
She was one of the first women members of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1835. She has an Oxford college, a moon crater, an Arctic island and an asteroid named after her, and appears on the Royal Bank of Scotland £10 note.
The houses on the south side of the square date from the 16th and 17th centuries.
