The impressive and rather unusual Porte Buildings were built in 1899. They are near the site of the East Porte – a gate which was the main entrance to the town from 1635. At about that time the burgh was enclosed by a stone and turf wall. Two pillars from the Porte now stand at the entrance to The Links, just across the road. Other interesting buildings in the area are the old Free Church across the road which opened in 1861 and is now sheltered housing, and the converted Porte Cinema round the corner which was one of Scotland’s first purpose – built cinemas, opened in 1915.
