Smith’s mother was Margaret Douglas of Strathendry, daughter of a wealthy landowner. Her house at 218-220 High Street was extensive and boasted beautifully laid out gardens with fruit trees and bushes, herbaceous borders and hotbeds for exotic species. The garden extended down to the rig buildings which themselves extended to the Sands Road located just above high tide. It was at this house that Smith wrote and published the Wealth of Nations after he had returned from France. The original house was demolished in 1834 and there is a commemorative plaque on the wall of the newer building.
