Adam would have wandered on the beach here as a boy and later in his life he still loved long strolls along the shore. He would have looked south to Edinburgh, and eastwards watching ships coming and going to the rest of the world, which would surely would have fostered inspiration for The Wealth of Nations. Sands Road which ran along the Kirkcaldy shoreline became the Esplanade in 1922-23 after a seawall was built. It is more than one mile long and is now part of the Fife Coastal Path.
