Bruce Street is one of the oldest streets in Dunfermline. It used to be called Colliers Row back in the middle ages and was renamed to Bruce Street, in honour of King Robert the Bruce, in 1833 when the town began to expand through industrialisation and a growing population.
Bruce Street was another entrance/exit to the old town with a port (gate) which was at the north end of the street.
There was a great fire in Dunfermline in 1624 and it’s thought that it started in Bruce Street which would have had wooden buildings at that time.
Over the centuries there have been a wide range of businesses and services on the street and that continues today.
