The Linen Quarter is the modern name for the area which was home to a very important industry in Dunfermline’s past.
Starting in the 18th Century, the manufacture of linen was carried out by families using handlooms in their own homes and by the middle of the 19th Century this home industry had been replaced by large mills (which put handloom weavers like Andrew Carnegie’s father out of work).
In its prime the tall chimneys from the steam powered mills would have dominated the Dunfermline skyline. These mills produced the famous damask table linen and silk that the town was famous for.
You can see still see some of the buildings today.
